7 Poetry Books you and your kids will LOVE

IMG 7227
Poetry is so much fun to read with kids! My family did a weekly poetry tea time for the longest, then we took a long summer break, and now the kids are requesting it again. This month we'll be starting a poetry "hot cocoa" time, to change things up a bit.

Do your kids like poems?

  • Poetry doesn't take a long time to read, so you can start and finish multiple poems in one sitting.
  • Poetry can provide comfort, improving your child's mental health.
  • Poetry can also improve your child's vocabulary.
  • Poetry can give your child a new perspective on the world and help with creative thinking.
  • Some poems can make you laugh out loud, which is always a welcome treat.
Throughout our years of homeschooling, my kids have memorized dozens of poems. Memorywork is just one of those curriculum ideas that I never took off the schedule, even as my oldest girls advanced into high school. How nostalgic it is for them to recite an old poem from memory - at the drop of a hat. It's an especially useful skill when we get a Tornado Warning alert, and we all have to pile into the same closet for safety.

Here are some old and newer favorite poetry books to add your your family's collection (affiliate links included):

teakettle1a

It's just you and your little one (or big one!) for the day, heading out of the house for a special mother-daughter or mother-son excursion. What's the occasion? Take your pick! You can plan a mother-child escape with any age child, for any number of occasions. Here are just a few:

  • birthdays
  • graduation (pre-K all the way through college)

  • dad's out of town for work and you need something cool to do in the meantime
  • school holiday
  • no reason at all

You really don't need a special reason to spend quality time with your child exploring a new place or activity. Here are some fun things to do to have the most memorable excursion.

Make "mommy friends" when you're in your 30's & 40's! Here's how:

make new friends
My eight-year-old will have a new BFF five minutes into our stop at Northshore Park. I'm not sure exactly how the magic happens, but literally within minutes, she and another kiddo are racing around the playground, sharing secrets as though they've been best friends for years.

As we get older, things aren't as smooth. Making new mommy friends in your 30's (and 40's) can be challenging. Now, you're not only looking for relationships that will benefit you, you have to think about those that benefit the rest of your family as well. (Or do you?)

Self Care Quickies for busy moms (this means YOU)

 self care tips

Are you taking care of yourself? Sometimes, we moms can be quick to take care of everyone and everything around us, but when it comes to ourselves, we're neglectful. Self Care doesn't have to involve long, drawn-out plans. You know, that trip to the spa for a massage, or the coffee date with girlfriends... yeah, give that up! You don't have time for those indulgences EVERY DAY. Instead, focus on the basics.

You might be surprised how much of these to-dos you miss doing every day. But don't worry about the past. Start from this very moment. Or if it's already past your bedtime, start fresh tomorrow!

9 Date Morning ideas that Couples in The Woodlands must try

morningdate1
Who’s waiting for evening time to go out on a date? Not me! Morning dates are great because you can focus on you sweetheart at the very beginning of the day, before “mom duties’ kick in and you become tired and overwhelmed.

Morning dates give you and your partner an opportunity to prioritize each other, to enjoy the freshness of a new day together, to share renewed energy. If you’re so over date NIGHT, try out one of these ideas on a Saturday / Sunday morning (or any other morning you and your honey can escape together.)

All the reasons to love Riva Row!

Quick, what do you think of when you hear the two words Riva Row? Me too! I always think about the boat house and the kayaks that you can rent!

Yes it’s true, you can rent kayaks, and you can also rent paddle boards, aqua bikes, and swan boats, and you should certainly try it out sometime.

But aside from the boat house rentals, and aside from the Riva Row townhomes, there’s actually a Riva Row Park. Have you taken the time to notice?

Mediterranean Lovers - Make this Tunisian Pasta Salad for Saturday brunch!

One of the most memorable gifts I've received as a mom was a SALAD! When I gave birth to my third daughter, my friends put together a meal train for me, and one of the ladies brought over this beautiful pasta salad with bread. At first glance, it certainly wasn't as impressive as some of the other meals I'd received that week, and there was no meat to be found. But who was I to complain?

It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring... he went to bed with a bump on his head, and he couldn't get up in the morning!

Do you sing this rainy day song to your child? When it's raining and pouring outside, I love to stay in, cozy up, and do absolutely nothing. (Funny thing, I prefer to do the same thing on sunny days as well!) But a day of rain is the perfect opportunity for kids of all ages to have a little bit of fun!

I bet you've already seen my list of Top 50 fun places to go in The Woodlands, and a lot of those places are indoor places that are great for rainy days. But what if you just want to stay home? In your PJ's? With a cup of tea at the ready? And pass the days having simple fun with the family?

Need some casual and comfy (and cheap) sneakers? Try these!

I set out to find a shoe that was cute, comfortable, sporty like, but not too sporty, and something I could wear with destructive jeans as well as a casual dress or skirt. Off to The Woodlands Mall I went!

Most of the sneakers I saw had soles that were just too doggone thick. I guess that’s the trend these days, but bulky shoes are not my jam. I wanted something simple, streamlined, and sophisticated. My plan was to look at  Converse, Keds, Vans, and Hilfiger, and I was able to find styles in all these brands that were close to what I wanted, but none of these options were love at first sight.
