Your Little One Can Sew her own Cozy Pajama Pants

taylors2
I don’t care how modern our world gets, handicrafts are something I will always cherish and try to include in the lives of my children. Our favorites over the years have been sewing, finger knitting, woodworking, and making dishes with air dry clay. Sadly, we haven’t experimented with basket weaving yet, but some of my daughters have had their own experiences weaving tiny baskets at various camps. Maybe 2025 will be our year to delve into it!

Homemade Toys & Activities

homemadetoys
Playtime doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive! These homemade toys and imaginative activities are easy to put together and offer tons of fun! Enjoy!

Use old flannel shirts or denim jeans to make your own bean bags. Cut the fabric into squares, sew up three sides, and add beans or rice before sewing up the final side. These make for a fun game of catch or bean bag toss, and are an interesting sensory tool.

A large cardboard box is an imagination booster! Draw or cut-out windows and a door to make a house. Cover the bottom with a blanket, tie a jump rope to one end, and you’ve got the perfect “car” to pull your tot through the house or the lawn. Or simply set the unaltered box in the middle of the floor and see how creative your child can get.

Inauguration Day - What to Expect, and Learning Fun for the family

inauguration day activities

For better or for worse (we’re not judging), it’s time to say “goodbye Biden” and “hello Trump.” According to the 20th Amendment to the US Constitution, a president's four-year term ends at noon on Jan. 20. Shortly afterwards, the president-elect is sworn in.

This time in history is always something I look forward to experiencing with my kids, especially as a homeschooling family. It’s not a time for us to discuss “politics” in the usual sense. Rather, we discuss our country’s government and its history, along with some of the facts about the Executive Branch of the US.

Feeling cold? Here's how to embrace the chilly weather and enjoy The Great Outdoors!

 cold weather

I used to be the first person to hide from cold weather! I don’t like feeling cold, and even when I’m in the house, I like wearing long sleeves, house slippers, and sometimes a fuzzy robe. Add in temperatures below 50, and you’d be hard-pressed to get me to step outside the house, except to run a random errand or two.

A few Decembers ago, after watching a mom and her twin toddler girls bundle up and take a walk outside in the cold rain (while one of the tots gleefully pushed along a doll stroller), I came to realize that The Great Outdoors is very all seasons! Hiding indoors for 3 months (or actually less, since our area doesn’t really get a true winter) is not the plan. Bikes can be ridden, walks can be taken, and fun can be had outdoors, in any weather, with just a bit of preparation. Here are some tips to help you and your family get outside, embrace the cold, and make the most of the winter season!

  1. Peppermint stick / candy cane. Add a little more sweetness to your tasty holiday drink by throwing in a peppermint stick. Not to mention, it’s a perfect way to make sure those candy cane tree decorations go to good use. For an extra fun (and potentially sticky) addition, get a pack of candy cane spoons from Walmart.
