Tax-Free Shopping Weekend in Texas
Sunday, August 07, 2022

Beginning Friday, August 5, and ending Sunday, August 7, all purchases of $100 or less on products including backpacks, clothing, footwear and school supplies can be made without the addition of charged sales tax. Qualifying items are charged individually, meaning you can purchase two $70 backpacks and not pay sales tax for either, even though the total price of goods amounts to more than $100. Purchases can be made from a Texas store as well as online or through the catalog of a company doing business in Texas, according to the Texas Comptroller website.

Items that do not qualify for sales tax relief include "specialty" clothing and equipment geared toward athletics, such as cleats or skates. In some cases, sellers may charge you sales tax and require you to submit a tax exemption refund form to receive your tax break for qualifying items. Other non-qualifying items include computers, laptops, electronics and all items over $100.
