Springtime is here, which means it's time to talk about our favorite places to pick fresh fruit! Suburban Houston is lucky to have plenty farms outside the city to get your fruit-and-veggie-picking fix! The icy winter storm set things back a few weeks for some farms, but April's here and things are bouncing back!
Harvesting fresh edibles is a healthy outdoor family activity that can encourage kids to learn about how the foods we eat gets from the farm to our table. But more than anything, it's a WHOLE lotta fun!
To ensure a great visit at the farm (and keep your little pickers happy), watch your weather. Early in the morning before the heat hits or on a cloudy or rainy day are great times to pick; otherwise prepare for sun, humidity and heat. If your day will be sunny, bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of drinks. Fields are often sandy or muddy so play shoes or easily cleanable shoes are a good idea. Check accepted payment methods before you go - some farms only take cash or check. U-pick farms also generally have sporadic days and times that they are open for picking. Please call farms ahead or check Facebook for hours and what's in season before loading up the car.
