I had the most wonderful experience decorating cupcakes with my 10 year old, as part of the Create by CRAVE experience at CRAVE in The Woodlands.
Now I bet you’re thinking “I decorate cupcakes at home with my kids all the time. What’s so special about Create by CRAVE?”
In a word, everything.
When I decorate cupcakes at home, I end up with a plate of puny cupcakes all decorated with chocolate icing and blue sprinkles. On the contrary, the photo below is just a sampling of the cupcake creations you can make at Crave! How’s this for inspiration?
The difference between CRAVE – voted consecutively as “Houston’s Best Cupcakes” - and my house? Well, most importantly, you get to start with bakery-quality, fresh, gourmet cupcakes as a base. No offense to my faithful box of Betty Crocker mix, but sometimes, only the best will do!
Even more impressive, Create by CRAVE has every cupcake decorating tool you could possibly imagine! Like 200 times what I have at home! Seriously, at home, we have butter knives, canned icing and blue sprinkles (no joke). With Create by CRAVE, you get to use their delicious chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla icing, over a dozen colors of fondant, and you have access to so many other options: pearls, sprinkles of various colors and shapes, eyes (for making faces), and various types of candies. And oh, the tools! There are more fondant cutters than you can shake a stick at! Flowers, leaves, animal faces, letters, cars, sports, flags, clothing, crosses, valentine’s, etc. There are castle molds, piping bags and tips for icing, food pens, fondant punches... I mean really, who knew all this stuff even existed in the cupcake world? Everything was meticulously labeled in bins, and the host basically said “have at it!”
Within our hour and a half appointment, we had full access to all the tools (plus there were instruction booklets to help us as needed), and we were left alone to be as creative as we wanted to. Our host was gracious enough to explain everything to us and to check on us often. We truly had a ball! The icing on the cake? We didn’t have to clean up our mess and wash any of the dishes!
Let’s get one thing straight. I’m pretty good at blogging and writing articles. Decorating cupcakes – no matter the arsenal of tools at my disposal - has never been my strong suit, but my daughter and I still managed to produce six cupcakes that we were proud to show off and that the rest of the family were excited to see and eat. Notice we even did a simple chocolate with blue sprinkles for nostalgia!
