Lights, camera—symphony! The Woodlands Symphony Orchestra (WSO) opens its twelfth season with a blockbuster celebration of movie music. On Sept. 24, the orchestra will take the main stage of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for a free community concert (no tickets required), transporting audiences back to the unforgettable soundtracks of the 1980s. Gates open at 6 p.m., and the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Come early and attend “Hats Off to Reading” at 5 p.m. in The Pavilion Event Center and take home a free book, too!
“If you’re an ’80s music fan, you’ll have the time of your life at this concert,” said WSO Artistic Director Darryl Bayer. “These soundtracks defined a generation, and forty years later they still move us. What a feeling to bring these memories back to life for the Woodlands community—young and old alike.”
This symphonic night at the movies has it all:
- Action and adventure: “Mission: Impossible,” “Back to the Future,” and “Conan the Barbarian.”
- Heart and inspiration: “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial,” “Rocky,” and “Dirty Dancing.”
- Comedy and suspense: “Ghostbusters,” “Beetlejuice,” and “Beverly Hills Cop.”
Attendees are encouraged to join the fun by dressing in 1980s style—whether that’s classic fashion from the decade or as your favorite movie/TV character or rock star from the ‘80s. The evening will wrap up with a nod to modern favorites, featuring music from “Wicked” and “How to Train Your Dragon.”
“We invite you to relive some of the movies’ most magnificent moments with talented musicians from right here in our community—all in a free, family-friendly setting,” added Bayer. “Taking the mainstage are hometown heroes: Jon Yerby—John Cooper School alumnus, now Professor of Guitar at Texas A&M with a doctorate in guitar performance— and the talented teen dance teams from Boni’s Dance Studio. What a fantastic celebration of our community’s own stars!”
This fine-arts performance is made possible through the support of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, Howard Hughes, and generous donations from The Woodlands Symphony’s loyal fans. For details on upcoming performances or to make a tax-deductible donation, visit www.woodlandssymphony.org.
