Emerging indie pop artist Eiffel Taylor was determined to arrive to the Spring-located music studio in time to record her second single, “Flip the Tables.” So was her mom. Running late for their appointment and rushing, Karen Logan sped out of the home garage before it fully opened, crashing into the garage door and ripping down the minivan’s spoiler in a forced, frenzied exit.
The event would set the precedent for further “studio day” woes, foreshadowing an instance of hunkering down in a dark and musty guest closet because of a sudden tornado warning, and another catastrophe of witnessing an essential studio speaker reach its end of life in the middle of a critical song-mixing session, amongst other setbacks. Nine months after the initial Dukes-of-Hazzard-like tour de force, Eiffel Taylor is due to release her second single “Flip the Tables” on Amazon Music and all major digital streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music, as well as iTunes, at 12:01am Friday, September 2, 2022.
“Flip the Tables” is an irritated young woman’s warning to her suitor as their courtship approaches the point of no hope due to his misdeeds. The title is synonymous with losing one’s cool, and, while the intro is mellow and undemanding, the track progresses to a distinct message of exasperation and alarm. Originally comprised of over 200 recorded tracks, the song’s skillfully composed arrangement is complex yet effortless, and its vocal performance underscores a tone of youthful vibrance and innocence.
Max Panasiuk [Spotify playlister] highlights “Flip the Tables” as “atmospheric and classy,” while Sarah Lynne of Music & Fashion Blog applauses the track’s lovely delivery of lyrics. The song boasts a "soft soulful instrumental line" [Nataliia Do, Spotify playlister] with "catchy lyrics and super sweet vocals” [Lora Wey, Music Reviewer].
A native of The Woodlands, Texas, the seventeen-year-old musician, singer, and songwriter is releasing “Flip the Tables" under the One Cherry Records label, following the 2021 release of her debut song “Tell Me Something.” Taylor is a homeschooled high school senior and is concurrently a full-time student at Lone Star College.
From composing the first 9 piano notes for “Flip the Tables’” instrumental progression, to striking a pose for press photos in her family’s living room, Taylor has undertaken what she refers to as a self-made Master Class for music production. When it comes to accomplishing new things, Taylor’s approach is to “just get started.”
“Considering how much time I spent working on this song, you’d think I was recording an entire album,” says Taylor of the lengthy production process. “I spent many months in and out of the studio not just singing but re-writing a lot of the lyrics, exploring vocal techniques, editing within Cubase—which is many steps up from my usual GarageBand—and even assisting my audio engineer with the mix. It was an entire hands-on educational experience, and I’m glad to have contributed my emerging production skills at every stage.”
Of that fateful day of the garage mishap in December 2021, Taylor feels blessed. “My dad rushed outside, quickly patched up the spoiler with blue duct tape, and said a prayer over us before sending us on our way. We saw him trying to bend the garage door back into shape as we pulled out of the driveway. And we were only a few minutes late to the studio that day.”
Taylor continues to improve her singing and songwriting craft by performing original songs throughout the Greater Houston area. Other creative talents include playing guitar and piano, ballet, choreography, beats-making, and creative writing.
