We enjoy weekly family story time at at the Mitchell Library and now my preschoolers are in love with the new Family Place Library features! With school out and the temperatures rising, the library offers a welcoming environment for young children to learn new skills, develop small motor movements, interact socially with others and read books as a family.
Family Place Library Launches at Mitchell Library
PUBLISHED:
The Mitchell Library is now part of the Family Place Libraries national network, providing a welcoming community environment with resources to help families nurture their children's development and early learning during the critical first years of life. "As a Family Place Library, the George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library strives to ensure that parents and caregivers of young children recognize the Library as a place to play, learn and grow," stated Childrens Librarian Shelly Lane.
The new features were added to the library in April 2017 and are located within the first floor Children's Area. The space, designed for children from birth to age five, features a variety of toys to play with, including wooden blocks, squishy dinosaurs, magnetic vehicles, bristle blocks and sensory blocks. These toys are closely located to seating for adults and kids as well as a featured parenting book collection containing carefully chosen works on early childhood. Puzzles, a play kitchen, a baby bassinet, LEGO wall, chalkboard wall and magnetic shape wall round out the new collection of educational toys that encourage imaginative fun.
Coming soon in the fall are a five week series of Parent-Child Workshops, featuring fun, play-based activities for toddlers and their parents and caregivers. Rich with toys, books and art activities, the Workshops provide an opportunity for families to spend time together, make friends and talk one-on-one with specialists on various aspects of child development and early literacy. Once the program is fully in place, the George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell Library will partner with local family-serving agencies and professionals to help parents of young children build foundations for early learning.
