Celebrate all the February occasions - 3 Simple Ideas for Each

lunar new year mom
We're already a week into February, with Groundhog Day and Super Bowl Sunday already checked off the list! Even still, there are many occasions left to acknowledge, and so little time. If you’re like me, you love giving a small nod to each special day on the calendar. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. A simple tradition, a shared experience, or even a conversation can make ordinary days feel meaningful.

Here’s a quick, no-stress list so nothing sneaks past you this month.

February 14 — Valentine’s Day

  1. Candy + Stuffies for the Kids
A small treat or plushie goes a long way. You can even pick up some cute stuff from the Dollar store! (There's a new Dollar Tree in town on Gosling, just south of The Woodlands).
  2. Family Love Notes
Leave a Valentine's card or  note on each child’s plate or pillow sharing one thing you love about them.
  3. Dinner Date (Out or In)
Head out with your beau or make it special at home once the kids are tucked in. If you're choosing to spending the occasion with your girlfriends instead, Galentine's is typically celebrated on February 13, so go paint the town red!

February 16 — Presidents’ Day

  1. Read Together: I recommend the book "So You Want to Be President?"
This is a fun, approachable way to spark conversation. You can even play a YouTube video of someone reading this book aloud.
  2. Money Matters
Look at U.S. coins and bills and talk about whose faces appear on each one.
  3. Presidential Picks
Let your child choose a president to learn one fun fact about.

February 17 — Mardi Gras

  1. Make Jambalaya (or Any Cajun Favorite)
Keep it simple. Packaged mixes count!
  2. Purple, Gold & Green Decor
Give the kids beads to wear. Also, balloons or streamers instantly set the mood.
  3. King Cake Time
This year, I've been getting mine from Rao's Bakery in Spring. Don’t forget to see who gets the baby.

February 17 — Lunar New Year

  1. Dine Out for the Occasion
P.F. Chang’s is an easy, festive option for families.
  2. Attend a Local Celebration
Celebrate on February 19 at Market Street’s Lunar New Year event.
  3. Learn a Tradition
Talk about lucky colors, animals of the zodiac, or why red envelopes are given.

All Month — Black History Month

  1. Family Movie Night
Watch Hidden Figures or another age-appropriate film highlighting Black history.
  2. Museum Night
Visit the Children’s Museum of Houston during their free family nights on Thursdays, featuring Black History Month programming.
  3. Spotlight a Changemaker
Choose one Black leader, artist, or innovator to learn about together.

Pick one idea from each list (or none at all!) and let February unfold with a little extra meaning.
