Say cheese! Fall season is here, and mother nature has given us beautiful hues to serve as the perfect backdrop for fall family pictures!  Let's take some photos, shall we? But first... do you want the kids to look straight at the camera and fake a smile, or do you want a natural, fun, "autumn rocks" type of vibe?

I knew you'd choose the latter! Whether you're doing the shoot yourself or hiring a professional photographer, here are some fall family photo ideas for making those portraits look amazing!

Snap away in a pumpkin patch.

Pumpkin Patches make for adorable photos, especially if you have young children. You pretty much just show up dressed in fall colors and strike some poses! The golden hour is typically the perfect time for outdoor photos. That's the time just before sunset, and in the early morning just after sunrise. Of course, you might not have access to your preferred pumpkin patch during this time of day. But if you do, take advantage of it!

Halloween theme

Don those cute or creepy costumes, and take photos of the kids or the entire family enjoying the seasonal fun of October. 

Throw leaves

On the count of three, everyone throw! A leaf-throwing photo exudes fun! Just line up the whole family and throw up leaves to give an otherwise boring photo more dimension, color, and fall flavor. Another option is to take the shot while your little one is holding a pile of leaves in his hands.  Don't forget to dress everyone in those cute fall outfits.

Three generations

Are grandma and grandpa around? Include them in the shoot as well! Choose a local park, and one great option for a cute photo is to have your little one in the center of the group while the adults interact / adore him!

Walk in the park

It's not entirely creative, but if you can find an adorable backdrop of fall foliage, a cute stroll while your husband holds your little one and your little one holds her favorite stuffy - well… that's one to be cherished for sure!

How does your family enjoy time outdoors in the autumn? Whether you're picnicking, roasting marshmallows, or throwing around a football, you can incorporate your favorite autumn activities into your shoot!

Bikes and trikes, oh my!

When the temperatures go down, the bicycles come out of the garage! Showcasing your little one on his favorite set of wheels is a great way to kick up the excitement of your photo shoot.

I do love the photos of people taking photos! It's cute because it captures the spirit of the moment, and it's what so many of us try to do when we all want to be in the picture. For your fall photo session, get the entire family together, scooch in close, and have one person take (or pretend to take) a photo. Everyone is looking at this person's phone camera, while the true photographer captures the scene from a different angle.

Baby's First Fall

If you have a pumpkin costume for your little one, don't let the shoot end without capturing some shots of him wearing it!

Cozy & Cute Blankets

Fall is about blankets and all things cozy! Bring out some of the best things about fall to incorporate into your shoot. Wrap yourselves in plaid blankets, sip on mugs of pumpkin spice lattes,  and get creative bringing a cozy vibe into your photo shoot.

Nothing says fall like fun picture books!  Against an autumn backdrop, pose with a few favorite seasonal reads! 

A bit of fantasy - yes please!

Does your child have a favorite stuffy? Include a photo of your child and his stuffed animal enjoying one of the pleasures of fall, like sipping tea from a mug. It's sure to add a big of whimsy and magic to the portraits!

Put your back into it

There's something nostalgic and classy about photos of families from behind. Turn away from the camera and get the shot!

Puppy love

Do you want to include the family pets in the shoot? Have everyone gather around the cute canine for a photo.

Get jiggy with it

I especially like this fun pose. Have dad hold the child around his neck, in somewhat of a horizontal fashion while mom holds the child's hands. This is a fun alternative to a piggy back ride.

Road trip ready

Are you headed out of town for the fall? Commemorate the occasion with some photos of the kids sitting with the suitcases as you're gearing up to go. The trunk of the SUV is a great place to stage this photo.
