15 Books to Read for Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is Sepember 15 - October 15 each year, and what better way to celebrate Hispanic culture and the contributions of Hispanics to our country by soaking up literature? The beautiful picture books suggested here are bursting with colors and are fun picks for reading aloud to your kids. The Latino community has been on the rise in The Woodlands for many years, and knowledge about their cultures - as well as all cultures - helps to create space for empathy, acceptance, and appreciation.

You may have already seen my post that highlights the activities my family and I are doing for this month. In addition, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, I've compiled this easy-to-access Shopping List of the books we're reading. One of the books, Esperanza Rising, is actually a chapter book, but the rest are picture books.

Truth is, you can probably find a lot of these books at our local libraries (I did!), but it's smart to have your own personal copies of at least some of these books so you and your family can enjoy over and over again outside of this special month. One particular book that we've owned for years and absolutely LOVE is "Too Many Tamales" by Gary Soto. It's the story of "a treasure thought to be lost in a batch of tamales; of a desperate and funny attempt by Maria and her cousins to eat their way out of trouble, and the warm way a family pulls together to make it a perfect Christmas after all.
