Mitchell Branch and the Montgomery County Memorial Library System, in cooperation with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, is proud to announce exciting programs this summer. Children ages birth-12 are invited to participate in the Texas Reading Club where they can earn fabulous rewards for reading 10 or more books. This year the Mitchell Library, located at 8125 Ashlane Way is hosting more than 21 events for all ages. Participation in summer reading programs is not required to attend library events, and all events are free and open to the public. This year’s theme is, Get A Clue…At The Library! Programs and activities are planned to promote reading as a leisure activity, stimulate curiosity, and encourage children to use library resources. The Texas Reading Club is self-paced and fosters reading success by rewarding children for the time they spend reading. The 2012 Summer Reading Cub is for both readers and listeners. It will run from Monday, June 11th through Thursday, July 12th. All children through 12 years of age may join. The last day to report books is Friday, July 13th at 4 p.m.

The South Montgomery County YMCA will be offering specialty camps this summer along with their regular day camp program offerings at the Creekside YMCA Outdoor Adventure Center. Specialty camp activities are fun, unique and concentrate around a central theme. Hours range from ½ day to all day for ages 5 – 12.
For ages 6 – 12, the YMCA is excited to offer Mad Science Camps! Have a spectacular summer with Mad Science! Embark on an edu-taining journey through different science disciplines while creating friendships and just having fun! Our summer camps are week-long programs that spark kids’ imaginations through hands-on activities and exciting demonstrations. Kids experience real, live science by building bridges, solving mysteries, flinging catapults, making solar-baked nachos, dying T-shirts, and many other stellar experiments! Hope to see you there! Mad Science camps are full week (Monday - Friday) camps, 9am - 4pm. A daily "snack-tivity" is provided in all camps, but Full-Day campers should also bring a sack lunch. Most Mad Science Camp activities happen indoors, but campers may occasionally go outside for projects and recess time. Sessions and themes are, July 2 – 6 Secret Agent Lab; July 16 – 20 Go Mad in the Lab; July 3- August 3 How Does it Work?; August 6 – 10 The Chemistry Mystery; and August 13 – 17 NASA Journey Into Outer Space. On the heels of a successful first year, Mark Kistler returns to northwest Houston with a one week reinvigorated Performing and Fine Arts Camp June 11-15. A band of accomplished artists from around the nation and Texas will lead workshops in claymation, dance, ‘Operamania,’ blotto-mania paint,’ improv theater, Kamishibai (paper drama) and Kistler’s own specialty, drawing in 3D The all-day camp for ages 5-15 will be held at Northwoods Catholic School just south of The Woodlands on FM 2920 at Gosling Rd in Spring.
Known for his Public Television series, “The Imagination Station,” and 9 Scholastic and Simon & Schuster books, Kistler has hand-picked these unique artists to share their gifts with Houston-area students. Kistler explained, “I am ecstatic that these inspired folks will be here for an entire week. Some I consider my art heroes.”

Welcome to Adventures on Promise Island at Woodland Oaks Church of Christ! Excitement and fun await as kids learn about promises that God made to Bible people. The kids will also see how those promises are for them too!
Each day at Seaside Celebration kids will participate in large-group music, skits, and fun as they are introduced to the life-changing promises God made. Then, after kids experience the other activities of the day, they’ll gather back at Seaside Celebration to review, to be encouraged, and to be motivated to live their lives confident that God will keep those promises!
At Lifeguard Lagoon kids will actively participate in telling Bible stories, then gather in small groups to discuss ways they can apply the stories to their lives. At Project Pointe kids will choose from a variety of creative and purposeful projects and activities that will remind them of God’s promises. Kids will also go to the Coconut Café and Fun Time Falls where they’ll have time to move around and fill up, as well as learn how they can be certain that God’s promises are for them too!

How do you know summer is right around the corner? One way is when the neigborhood pools start opening their gates! Beginning Saturday, May 12 one community pool in each village will be open for pre-season weekend use through Memorial Day. Regular pool season begins Friday, June 1, 2012.
Pre-Season hours are Saturdays, noon to 6 p.m., Sundays, 1 to 6 p.m., and Memorial Day, noon to 6 p.m. with weekday hours at Bear Branch Pool. The following pools are open for preseason use:
