In The Woodlands, every day we’re surrounded by so much natural beauty - tall pines, winding trails, and nearby lakes. But sometimes it takes a little extra push to actually pack up the kids and head outdoors. If you’ve been craving fresh air, more family connection, and maybe even a break from screens, camping could be the perfect solution.
Now, before you roll your eyes and picture yourself wrestling with tent poles or spending a small fortune at the sporting goods store, hear me out. Texas Parks & Wildlife makes camping easy and affordable with their Texas Outdoor Family Workshops. These are guided camping weekends held at state parks all across Texas - including Huntsville and Lake Livingston (both just a short drive from us!), and Galveston Island State Park if you’re in the mood for some beach vibes.
And moms, you don’t need any prior camping experience to join in. The program provides tents, lanterns, cooking stoves and fuel, sleeping cots, foam pads, and even the coffee press for that all-important morning cup!You just bring your family, some food, and the basics, and you’re set for a weekend of memory-making under the stars.
I had the chance to take my family on one of these adventures at Galveston Island State Park a while back, and it was such a great experience (beside the pesky mosquitoes). The rangers showed us how to set up our tent (yep, they assign each family their own tent!), and we felt so prepared and comfortable the entire weekend. We kept meals simple - chili dogs, s’mores, extra snacks, and bottled water - and it worked perfectly.

This fall, there are at least 18 (eighteen) one-night and two-night camping events scheduled at parks across Texas, including some right near us in The Woodlands:
- Huntsville State Park – just a short drive north
- Lake Livingston State Park – not far from Huntsville
- Galveston Island State Park – my personal favorite for the added beach vibes!
- Many other parks in/near the Houston, Austin, and Dallas/Ft Worth areas, so you have plenty of options!
Prices are family-friendly too: about $75 for a one-night adventure (up to 6 people) or $95 for a two-night stay.
What to Expect
Each workshop includes a mix of ranger-led activities and free time for your family. Depending on the park, you might:
- Kayak or paddleboard (we got to kayak at Galveston, and it was so fun!)
- Hike scenic trails and spot wildlife
- Stargaze under the Texas sky
- Cook over a campfire and make s’mores
- Try geocaching, nature crafts, or kite flying

Don’t worry - you're not tied to a strict schedule. If your family just wants to hang out at your campsite, explore on your own, or take it easy, you can!
A few notes: pets aren’t allowed at these workshops, and amenities vary by park. At Galveston, for example, our campsite had water, electricity, and restrooms with hot showers nearby (a lifesaver!).
Ready to Go?
If your family has been craving a little more time in nature or just a fun weekend away from the screens, this is such a great opportunity. The workshops are safe, welcoming, and designed to help families build confidence outdoors.
