Summer Fun Has Arrived at The Woodlands Resort

altI've spent weeks trying to plan the perfect family summer getaway. Do we drive hours to the beach, when I know my kids really just want to hang at the pool all day? Why bother, when a world of intoxicating beauty awaits close to home, but seemingly worlds away?

13th Annual YMCA Operation Backpack Runs July 11-August 11
altThe 13th annual YMCA Operation Backpack, the area's largest school supply drive, is gearing up to help more than 120,000 Greater Houston-area children start the school year off right. The YMCA of Greater Houston is mobilizing more than 30 YMCA centers, local churches and other community partners to help collect tens of thousands backpacks and school supplies for children who might otherwise head back to school unprepared.

This year, beginning July 11 through August 11, YMCA Operation Backpack will collect brand new backpacks filled with school supplies and distribute them to children in 36 Houston-area school districts including Conroe, Magnolia, Tomball and Willis ISDs. The YMCA centers throughout the city, including the Montgomery County YMCAs, will serve as collection sites for people to drop off backpacks and supplies.

Summer Teen Workshops at Montgomery County Women's Center
altMontgomery County Women's Center (MCWC) provides shelter, counseling, advocacy and accompaniment, legal services and transitional housing to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. In 2016 they started a Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) comprised of students from different high schools in Conroe and The Woodlands. MCWC acknowledges that youth are experts in their own lives and are key in developing solutions to the health issues in their lives. The primary function of the YAC is to recognize youth as valuable stakeholders and included them in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programming that the agency is delivering in schools and in the community. The committee meets bimonthly during the school year, offers weekly workshops over the summer and participates in monthly volunteering opportunities.
